 esents an overview of non-matching coupling algorithms for high-performanc
 e finite element applications\, with emphasis on implementation and precon
 ditioning aspects.We address ficitious domain\, immersed boundary\, and mi
 xed-dimensional problems on non-matching grids\, as arise in coupled PDE s
 ystems defined on heterogeneous domains.We derive different formulations a
 nd show how most of them can be traced back to variations or stabilization
 s of the Lagrange multiplier and distributed Lagrange multiplier framework
 s.We discuss various implementation aspects of the problem\, including exa
 ct and inexact integration across non-matching grids\, matrix based and ma
 trix-free transfer operators\, particle-based transfer operators\, and dis
 cuss briefly some augmented Lagrangian-based preconditioners\, designed to
  yield optimal and scalable convergence properties when used in conjunctio
 n with iterative Krylov solvers.Finally\, we discuss what is the current s
 tatus of the implementation for these solvers within the deal.II finite el
